Orthodontics is a specialised field of dentistry that focuses on diagnosing, preventing, and treating dental irregularities and issues related to facial growth.

After becoming a dentist, a Specialist Orthodontist undergoes an additional three years of advanced training through a recognized university program. This training equips them with the expertise to straighten teeth using orthodontic devices like braces and clear aligners.

Orthodontic treatment offers several advantages, including:

• Enhanced functionality of your teeth and jaw
• Easier oral hygiene
• More effective dental treatments

During your initial consultation, we will assess your smile to determine if orthodontic treatment could benefit you. Some of the aspects we will evaluate include:

• Do your front teeth protrude (overjet)?
• Do your upper teeth cover your lower teeth (deep bite)?
• Is there a gap between your upper and lower front teeth when biting down (open bite)?
• Are your lower teeth positioned in front of your upper teeth?
• Is there crowding or spacing in your teeth?
• Is the center of your teeth aligned in the front?
• Does your jaw shift to assist with chewing?

Orthodontic treatment is suitable for children, teenagers, and adults. We recommend that all children have an orthodontic evaluation by age 7 to assess their dental development and plan for potential future issues.

Typically, most children begin braces after losing all their baby teeth. However, it’s never too late to start treatment, and an increasing number of adults are now choosing braces and clear aligners.

The duration of your treatment is dependent on the severity of your problem and the type of appliance used. In general, treatment time can vary between 1-3 years.

If you play contact sports while wearing braces, you will need to wear a mouthguard. Since your teeth are moving regularly, we recommend using a mouldable mouthguard during treatment, which can be easily adjusted at home.

After completing your braces or aligner treatment, you’ll need to wear your retainer all the time. Eventually, you will only need to wear it at night. We will let you know when you can reduce wear.
