Braces for children & teens

The teenage years are the perfect time to start treatment with braces – but your child might benefit from treatment at an even younger age. We recommend having a consultation with your child before the age of 7 to see when it would be best for them to start treatment.

Some orthodontic issues can benefit from early monitoring and intervention, such as skeletal discrepancies, borderline non-extraction cases, space loss in dental arches, significant aesthetic concerns, crossbites, and severe overbites or open bites.

Addressing these problems early can often lead to more effective treatment compared to waiting until later. It may also help minimise or even eliminate the need for more extensive procedures down the line.

This is the average time to start orthodontic treatment. By this age, all adult teeth are erupting or present and the need for orthodontic treatment may be more apparent.

Types of braces for children and teens

At Warrnambool Orthodontic Hub, we offer two types of braces: metal braces and ceramic braces. Ceramic braces work just the same way as traditional metal braces but the brackets are made from clear ceramic that discreetly blends in with your child’s smile.

With either option, your child will come in for regular adjustment appointments where their Specialist Orthodontist will place small bends in their metal archwires. This will create targeted pressure that will gently guide your child’s smile into alignment.
